Psalm 91: Whoever Dwells in the Shelter of the Most High

Brian Kim

Translation with Analysis

Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High
   will rest under the protection of the Almighty
I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress,
             my God, in whom I trust.”

Surely he will save you
   from the enemy’s deception
   and from the deadly disease.
He will cover you with his almighty power,
    and under his realm you will find refuge;
    his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart
You will not fear the killer of night,
    nor the calamity that happens by day,
nor the apparition that stalks in the darkness,
    nor the devil that ravages at midday.
A thousand may fall at your side,
    ten thousand at your right hand,
    but it will not come near you.
You will only observe with your eyes
    and see how the wicked are ruined

If you say, “The Lord is my refuge,”
             and you make the Most High your dwelling,
                                        10 no harm will overtake you,
                           no disaster will be part of your lives.
                                        11 For he will command his angels concerning you
                            to guard you in all your ways;

12 they will lift you up in their hands,
                           so that you will not
strike your foot against a stone.
                                        13 You will overwhelm dangerous animals like lions and snakes;
                          you will be strong enough to kill
the fierce beasts and the lethally

            poisonous creatures.

                                                            14 “Because he loves me,” says the Lord, “I will rescue him;
                                      I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name.
                                                            15 He will call on me, and I will answer him;
                                        I will be with him in trouble,
                                        I will deliver him and honor him.
                                                            16 With long life I will satisfy him
                                       and show him my salvation.”

Interpretive Commentary

Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High

will rest under the protection of the Almighty.

Oh Lord…why? Why? Why is this happening to me?

Why do I have to die here?

A terror? The U.S. under attack?

NO! NO! NO! I don’t want to die. I’m not ready for death.

In every moment of my life you were with me.

You protected me from misfortunes and You blessed me with Your Holy Spirit.

And this is how You end my life?!

My God, PLEASE! At least let me die for You.

Don’t make me die by those fxxking muslims.

I BELIEVE! I believe You will protect me this time too.

Oh Jesus, my Lord, save me!

You will not fear the killer of night,
nor the calamity that happens by day,

OK Ok ok, let’s be calm. Whoooooo Haaaaaaa (deep breath).

There was a terror, and the airplane crashed into this building, and I’m on the top floor.
Is there any possibility I can escape? Maybe I can use the evacuation stairs and go down. There should be a way to escape. Think, Ethan, THINK!

Shit. The hellish flame is coming up through the stairs. There is no way to go out.

Maybe through the window? Oh right, I’m on the top floor.

KWAHaaaaaWhooooooooo (sound of the flame)

OMG what should I do. What should I do?!?!

Oh Lord please…I beg Your mercy. Will you burn Your child alive?

Please don’t. Please don’t.

You made Your people cross the Red Sea and saved them. Now, let the wall of flame split so that we can go out.

God I believe in You! Please!!

For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways;

Ok Lord, I’m in a terribly urgent situation right now. I don’t think this is the right time to test my belief. I sincerely repent all my sins, even the smallest one. So PLEASE! let me have another chance to follow Your words faithfully.

You said You would protect me! This inferno and…Khukkk khuuuckkk! (sound of cough) Is this gas? Oh my…God! God help me!

“Because he loves me,” says the LORD, “I will rescue him; I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name.

Lord? Are You listening?? Are You there???

Father in Heaven, I feel pain... my body is… melting. And I can’t…I can’t breathe.

Khukkk khuuuckkk! I feel diZzY now.

My Lord, I…I still believe in You.

God save me!

He will call on me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honor him. With long life I will satisfy him and show him my salvation.”

I think I don’t have much time.

Haaaah…was it a good life? Yeah…maybe…haha.

My loving parents, friends…hahaha

All the good memories are now flying away…I feel DEATH IS NEAR.

For His salvation, I lived my life…but too bad that I should die here.

Oh wait, but God didn’t say His salvation would be physical or material.

Hmm…is that why He planned my death here? To bring me into His real salvation?

Haha, what sophistry.

Anyway, my Lord! even though this is the end of my life, I still praise You.

You are my God, my Lord, in whom I feel comfort.

Make the blood of the Christ cover me.

Khukkk khuuuckkk!
